DIRECTOR/VPE COMMUNITY

When you move from engineering manager to director/VPE, it's a career transition - not just promotion! You're still responsible for line management of your director reports (typically engineering managers at this point) but you're also starting to take responsibility for organization design - whether that's reworking the hiring process, agreeing the interfaces for a platform team or clarifying SLO's and SLA's for the services your teams run.

The responsibilities given to a director or a VPE vary widely depending on the size and maturity of the larger engineering org. For some, they'll have latitude to change everything from pay bands to the hiring process. In others, there will be more shared structure across the org and they'll just be taking on special projects related to their orgs.
Initially we’ll be creating a single community of directors and VPE’s, but please let us know how many full time reports you have under your org - it’ll help us to put together special breakouts, events and round tables where you can share problems and get answers from your closest peers

WE ASK THAT EVERY COMMMUNITY MEMBER SHOW:
My name is Peter Bell. I ran engineering at General Assembly (an EdTech startup in NYC) along with a bunch of other startups that didn't get quite so much traction :) After getting fired from GA, I wanted to become a better engineering leader, and despite having co-founded the NY CTO School and being a member of the NY CTO Club, I really wanted to build a better way for senior engineering leaders to share problems and get answers.

In 2014, I organized the Inaugural New York CTO Summit where the CTOs of companies like MongoDB and Warby Parker shared their experiences of building and managing fast growth engineering orgs. Since then I've run 28 in-person and over 100 online summits, and it's clear from the 600+ presentations from senior engineering leaders that there are "good practices" for building and managing a fast growth engineering team - but they are not well distributed and often change frequently.

If you'd like access to monthly exclusive fireside chats, tutorials, benchmarks, case studies and playbooks on the hard parts of building and managing a fast growth engineering org optimized for growth stage venture backed companies and a safe, supportive, high trust, personally vetted community of other senior engineering leaders, join us on our journey to identify, organize and distribute effective, "good practices" for engineering leadership.

We are focusing on quality over quantity, so if you're interested in joining the community, please do sign up ASAP as we'll be pausing admissions frequently to make sure we can personally connect with and build a strong relationship with all of our new members.

We're all busy, but this is a chance to build a high trust support network to help you navigate the challenges of managing and scaling the impact of your org.

Initially we’ll be creating a single community of directors and VPE’s, but please let us know how many full time reports you have under your org - it’ll help us to put together special breakouts, events and round tables where you can share problems and get answers from your closest peers.
